About the Journal
Focus and scope
The Journal Geografia is a scientific journal dedicated to disseminating knowledge on topics pertinent to geographic science, aiming at the publication, preservation and recording of original and unpublished research that prioritizes the analysis and study of geographic space. The journal covers a wide range of publications from the geographic academic community and seeks to promote scientific advancement in the broad thematic areas of Human Geography and Physical Geography. The scope of its editorial line adopts original contributions that cover the categories of geographic analysis, as well as the use and deepening of spatial analysis, based on the basic concepts of geographic science.
History
Created in 1976, GEOGRAFIA is the result of the interest shown by Hucitec, a renowned publisher in the field of Brazilian human sciences, in launching a publication concerning the geographic science in partnership with the Association of Theoretical Geography (AGETEO), which five years earlier published Boletim de Geografia Teorética (Theoretical Geography Newsletter).
Jaime Pinsky, Flávio Aderaldo Castelo, Antonio Christofoletti and Lúcia Helena de Oliveira Gerardi were involved in the project to launch the new journal, and are its founders. Professor Antonio Christofoletti was in charge of coordinating the Editorial Commission, also composed by Professors Lúcia Gerardi and Miguel Cezar Sanchez. Besides the Editorial Commission, an Editorial Board was created, composed by 13 Brazilian and foreigner geographers (CHRISTOFOLETTI, 1990).
The first issue, published in 1976, had six articles involving epistemology, climatology, geography of agriculture, biogeography and urban geography, and expanded in the following issues. Throughout four decades, GEOGRAFIA was the destination of publications of national and international authors, which consolidated it as a recognized medium of scientific dissemination. It is worth mentioning that GEOGRAFIA, as a publication headquartered in Rio Claro, was sent to scientific institutions in all five continentes; such institutions, by means of exchange, sent their publications as a form of institutional partnership. Thanks to this and to the collaboration of other professors, such as Professor Odeibler Santo Guidugli, UNESP Rio Claro has one of the largest journal collections in Latin America.
The history of the journal is intertwined with the histories of the undergraduate and graduate courses. Thus, the articles, reviews and notes published during more than four decades tell the story of one of the main Geography schools in the country, the Rio Claro’s Geography.
Special thanks to Professor Lucia Gerardi, last editor in the AGETEO phase, who was invited to be honorary editor, in recognition of her contribution to the consolidation process of the journal.
Current Phase
To give continuity to this legacy, GEOGRAFIA, after 42 years under AGETEO's responsibility, begins a new phase starting to be edited by a committee composed by teachers and students of the Postgraduate Program in Geography at UNESP Rio Claro. With such changes, besides maintaining the commitment of its founders in the dissemination of geographic knowledge, we will seek to expand this commitment to other areas of knowledge, maintaining it as a democratic and high-level journal.
An important element that should be highlighted is the participation of students in the transition process from AGETEO to the Postgraduate Program. The active participation of the students signals their interest in other fronts of the academic environment, maintaining the respect and commitment to the history of the journal.
We understand that a scientific journal is an important tool for the dissemination and socialization of knowledge. Therefore, we hope to contribute to the publicizing of geographic knowledge, reaching especially researchers, undergraduate and graduate students in Geography, both nationally and internationally. Furthermore, given the wide range of topics converging on geographic science, we ask that authors pay attention to the scope of the journal. Therefore, only those articles that include categories of geographic analysis will be accepted, that is, it is important to use and deepen the spatial analysis, as well as the basic concepts of Geography.
In order to keep this commitment, GEOGRAFIA counts on a Scientific Board composed of reviewers from institutions distributed throughout Brazil, in addition to the contribution of international reviewers; also, starting in 2021 it adopted the continuous flow publication system, ensuring greater agility in editorial process.
Finally, we invite the entire scientific community to contribute with articles, interviews and reviews.
