The insertion of Quissamã municipal district in sugar agribusiness

Abstract

The studies about agribusiness (“complexos agroindustriais”) in the state of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), specifically about the production of sugar and alcohol at its north region, has been one of the focuses of NEGEF (group of studies in geography of Rio de Janeiro). After researches about the function of this economic sector to social and spacial transformations on the region (wich includes nine municipal districts), our group tried to study the specific case of Quissamã municipal district. This paper starts with general observations about the region, brings to debate the aplication of the “complexos agroindustriais” concept and contains the results of our researches about sugar-cane plantation at Quissamã, by a diagnostic of its “social-space formation”.
