System approach and Geography

Abstract

The influence of the “General Systems Theory” is an incontestable fact. Its ramifications are broad and based on a growing change, involving interconnections among society, science, technology and philosophy. By following a chronological approach, this paper discusses the conceptual basis of the “General Systems Theory” in Geography and its theoretical-methodological and technological extendings. The geographical science pursues, as one of its basis, a comprehensive knowledge of the environment complexity. Therefore, it is possible to clearly identify the onset of a new environment perspective, with emphasis in both society and nature, at the same time that the systemic paradigm and its extendings are strongly influencing the Geographical science, bringing the discussion of new concepts, their origins and applications.
