A VIEW OF THE BRAZILIAN NATION AND BRAZILIAN POPULAR MUSIC: a proposal for teaching Geography
Abstract
The article aims to analyze the attempts of creating symbols for the Brazilian nation, discussing these efforts mainly during the Empire Age and at the beginning of the Republic, including lyrics of authors of Brazilian Popular Music (MPB) as suggestions to be used to chat about this theme in Geography classroom at high school. It writes on the matter of Geography in this process, the use of the nature and cartographic images, as a try to place the Nation and State as equivalent. It says that Geography, in this period, looks for establishing a connection between the geographic speech and the construction of the Brazilian nation, provoking an identification between it and the State. Later, this text only intends to identify aspects of the view that MPB lyrics brings of the Brazilian State, looking for inserting them into their appropriate context. Key words: Geography. Nation.
