Abstract

Mining has socioeconomic importance and potential impact on the geodiversity of southern Ceará. It was established in the 18th century and has since reached a diverse and complex framework in the current scenario, consequently raising questions about its environmental sustainability. Considering the need for further studies on the activity, present in the nine municipalities of the Metropolitan Region of Cariri (RMCariri), the purpose of this study is to analyze the environmental sustainability of mining in the RMCariri, making up the geohistorical construction of the activity and its main environmental impacts. The methodological guidelines have a qualitative approach, divided into theoretical-conceptual basis and technical-scientific contingente and subdivided into interrelated stages of office, field and laboratory. The results achieved highlight the historical correlation of the activity with the development of the region. They also highlight the scope of the identified impacts, as well as the need to consider the continuity of the activity by applying effective and specific sustainable measures for each municipality and its natural characteristics. Such measures will, therefore, guarantee the minimum conservation of the geodiversity in the RMCariri.
