EXPERIENCING GEOGRAPHY LITERACY IN SCHOOL
Abstract
Geography literacy shows its importance as educators appropriate this knowledge and integrate them into other areas of knowledge. This article results from a course held at the São Paulo State University (UNESP), Rio Claro, Brazil, in which teachers from the municipal network, through in-service training, were able to improve their knowledge. Based on authors like Maia (2021), Libâneo (2012), Lopes and Vasconcelos (2005), among others, the paper discusses the importance of developing geographic knowledge since Early Childhood Education. Practical situations brought about by the participating teachers reveal that Geography is not simply a class, but presents ways to appropriate concepts in a playful way. Academic and school knowledge coexist and complement each other in the training and performance of basic education teachers.
