SCIENCE DENIAL AGAINST THE VACCINATION IN TIMES OF PANDEMIC: A GEOGRAPHIC PERSPECTIVE
Abstract
With the discovery of COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) at the end of 2019, science denial ensures its continuity through new demands like the emergence and the containment methods of the virus, as well as the effectiveness of vaccines in the path towards eradicating the new disease. Relying on false narratives that, like COVID-19 itself, have manifested spatially in a heterogeneous manner around the globe, primarily in those countries where conservatism, characterized by the extreme right-wing, was in power. In response to this phenomenon, this research aims to provoke some reflections on the contributions that critical geography can make in combating denial and its manifestation against vaccines. This considers the importance of mass vaccination and its social impacts, as well as the full exercise of autonomy guaranteed by the use of truth and science. For this purpose, this exploratory research will employ Historical Dialectical Materialism as its method, seeking to minimize the impacts of this phenomenon rooted in the perverse globalization and reinforce the role of geographical science. The ultimate goal is to provide considerations for decision-making in the social, political, and economic spheres regarding these challenges.
