Abstract

The study aimed to investigate the interactions among erosion, water resources and environmental hazards in the Mogi-Guaçu River Basin, State of São Paulo, Brazil. Some case studies were performed in view of evaluating the environmental hazards in the area, integrating technical-scientific knowledge, empirical approach and the population perception of the environmental risks in the river basin, with special emphasis on erosion processes, associated land uses and water resources. Information sources were: public meetings to list the environmental problems, interviews, cartographical and different bibliographical surveys, including media analyses, and field works. The results lead to prevent environmental risk situations and subsidise the environmental planning of the area. Moreover, this study aimed to stress the importance of the environmental social perception of the river basin. Key Words: erosion; water supply; environmental hazards; case study; social perception.
