Time variability of total ozone in South America using TOMS data
Abstract
This paper deals with the seasonal and inter-annual variability of stratospheric ozone in South America using imagery obtained by the ozone mapping spectrometer (TOMS) instrument carried onboard the Nimbus 7 satellite. The analyses were done applying empirical orthogonal functions in monthly mean images for the jan1979 to dez1992 period. The main spatial modes of the total ozone are related to the latitudinal dependence (annual cycle), expansion of the Antarctic ozone hole, the quasi-biennial oscillation and influences of the El Niño episodes. Key-words: ozone; TOMS image; EOF.Downloads
