Abstract

Public squares are elements of urban space that favor leisure and rest, but that can also contribute to the understanding of the social, political, economic, environmental, and cultural dynamics of cities. This article analyzes quali-quantitatively public squares in Uberaba-MG. It demonstrates the distribution in the urban space, the characteristics of its infrastructure and aspects of uses and appropriations. Through bibliographic surveys, consultations with public agencies, field observations, among others, the result is the mapping of the squares and an analysis of the real conditions of these spaces. It is concluded that the aspects of public policies adopted in these places denounce the socio-spatial segregation in Uberaba as in other Brazilian cities.
