Abstract

This article reports on an investigation which sought to determine if the use of spreadsheets in the teaching of rational numbers in elementary education contributes to learning and improved learning retention. The study was carried out with a sample of students from two sixth-grade classes in a public school in Porto Alegre. Results indicated that the use of spreadsheets favored learning and made the classes more participatory for the students, who were able to visualize the processes they were working with. A second test applied five months after the first test showed that students who used the spreadsheets had greater learning retention of the contents. The results also show that the students felt comfortable with the technology, and almost all reported that they were more motivated by the use of computers in the classroom, despite less-than-ideal laboratory conditions.
