Abstract

The aim of this study is the application of geographical information system (GIS) in geoecosystem analysis to define homogeneous areas of environmental fragility, considering as a reference the São João Creek Basin, tributary of Paraopeba River, located between 44º 15´and 44º 35´West and 19º 20´and 19º 35´South. It was used official cartographic maps from IBGE, scale of 1:100.000, projection UTM,SAD 69 and Landsat7 images, years of 1990 and 2000. The data to conduct the spatial analysis of the abiotic resources were: slope, soils and geology. From the biotic resources, was considered land use in 1990 and 2000. The climate was used to validate the analysis. The process included statistical treatment, using the program LEGAL module of SPRING and the spatial treatment was processed using SPRING and Arc Gis. The use of model information proved efficiency as a methodology spacializing the degrees of environmental fragility. The results shows that the geoecosystem of São João Creek, compared with the land observations, is similar with the results seemed in GIS models. Key words: Geoecosystem. River Basin.
