This experience report proposes reflections on how fear often delineates and restricts work in early childhood education. The curatorship of the animation The Sandcastle, promoted by the Cine club of two municipal schools in the peripheral regions of Campinas, raised controversies when some deemed the film unsuitable for babies, who would be afraid of its images and sounds. Thus, this study reports the journey of a member who tries to convince the Cine club to expose babies to the film based on her personal experience. The text produces a written and photographic record of the preparation and organization of the film screening sessions, discussing their reverberations in children’s conversations, reports, and games. It also presents other moments in which fears almost precluded the performance of certain actions when working with cinema in early childhood education, stressing the importance of discussing such a theme so that adults’ fears do not interfere in what is offered to children and babies.
