Abstract

The main purpose of this text is to problematize the relationship between childhood and adult time in educational institutions. For this, we consider a lecture by Paulo Freire at the Faculty of Law of the University of São Paulo (USP), on June 2, 1988, entitled “Human Rights and Liberating Education”. The text is composed of an introduction, two sections and final considerations. In the section “A childlike education in human rights” we offer the main ideas presented in this intervention by the Patron of Brazilian Education and we focus on a reference that helps us to think, in a second section entitled “Education and the time of childhood: how many ages fit in one age?”, the relationship between education and the time of ages or the different time periods that fit an age. Finally, in the “Final Considerations” we deal with the question that gives the title to the present work: “How old is Paulo Freire?” inspired by ideas of the Mozambican poet Mia Couto.
