The urban space reproduction and territory-environmental transformations: a case of study

Abstract

This paper considers the urban space reproduction and territory-environmental transformations. In order to analyze this issue, it was taken as empirical reference Teotônio Vilela District, one of the poorest and most populous in Ilhéus City. To achieve this goal, cartographic material analyzed (maps, aerial photo and satellite image) and the Photos were taken. 196 questionnaires were, at random, between the inhabitants of the district... The collected datas in this survey revealed that, an advanced level of environmental degradation, consisting of the destruction of the mangroves, which were filled with dirt and the deforestation of slopping areas. It was also identified in this district, 60% of the interviewed families are supported with less than a minimum salary; and only 34% of the homes which were included in the study are accessed to drain system; 66% do not even have a septic tank. From the comprehension of the phenomenon, it was possible to conclude that the territory-ambient transformations in the urban space are not due to a simple instability between the social relations. On the contrary, there is a complex of social, economical and political problems, linked to the productive structure, the governmental authority actions and cultural factors.
