Abstract

The Corumbataí River basin, at the center region of the São Paulo State, Brazil, is entirely located in the geomorphologic domain of the Peripheral Depression. In its north, northwest and west limits, the basaltic-sandstone escarpments, the basaltic cuestas and the Occidental Plateau, contributes to the existence of many landscapes with scenic beauty. The geological diversity of the region partially controlled its relief and the lithological and paleontological records contribute to the formation of other geotouristic attractions. The advancement of the geoscientific knowledge, mainly resulting from researches developed in universities, difficultly reaches the general public due to the specialized language. Taking advantage of the tourist aptitude and the geological diversity of the region, this paper proposes the exploration of the geotourism to increase the interest of the population for the natural resources and to diffuse the scientific knowledge. 16 representative localities were selected which geological and landscape aspects may attract the practice of the geotourism. Explanatory texts were elaborated in simplified language, with outcrop photographs, figures and geological maps. To allow its broad and easy access to the public, including students, public organs and tourism companies, the generated materials were made available in the Internet using the Mapserver and Maplab
