Abstract
The occurrence of megafauna is recorded since the XIX century for many Brazilian states. After 1985, studies in Sergipe State were intensified. Until now Eremotherium laurillardi, Stegomastodon waringi, Palaeolama major, Scelidodon cuvieri and Toxodon sp were identified, from Aquidabã, Canhoba, Monte Alegre and Poço Redondo municipalities. In 2002 new fossils were found in a Pleistocene “tank” in the district of Gararu with: Tardigrada (Megatheriidae – Eremotherium laurillardi, Mylodontidae – Catonyx cuvieri, Mylodontidae - Mylodontinae); Cingulata (Glyptodontidae – Glyptodon cf. G. clavipes); Notoungulata (Toxodontidae); Artiodactyla (Camelidae – Palaeolama major); Perissodactyla (Equidae – Equinae); Proboscidea (Gomphotheriidae – Stegomastodon waringi); Carnivora (Felidae – Smilodon populator). Such studies identified for the first time the occurrence of Mylodontidae, Equinae, Catonyx cuvieri, Smilodon populator and Glyptodon cf. G. clavipes in Sergipe State.
