The need to plan and drive the use of the lands led to the emergence of various methods for this purpose, including geotechnical mapping. The assessment of land suitability for urbanization has traditionally been carried out by geotechnical mapping, and is currently heavily supported by GIS tools. Fuzzy logic is a mathematical method that can be applied as a GIS tool for mapping purposes when it is necessary to carry out an integrated analysis of several themes. This study aimed to test the application of fuzzy logic for the elaboration of a geotechnical mapping on the suitability of terrains of the expansion area of UNICAMP for urbanization. For this purpose, geological, hydrological, geomorphological and soil maps were compiled, updated in the field and treated by the GIS software, ArcMap 10.7. Then the fuzzy logic was applied and the suitability units for urbanization were determined. In addition, geotechnical tests were performed in the units to better characterize those and validate the mapping generated by the fuzzy logic. Six classes of aptitude for urbanization were defined, separating areas suitable for occupation, areas with permitted occupation if certain technical criteria are observed, and areas with severe or absolute restriction to urbanization, such as preservation areas provided by environmental laws and or protection of water resources. The fuzzy logic showed to be an efficient method for the differentiation of the suitability of units for urbanization.
