Abstract

Knowing the geological history and the lithological behavior pattern allows the identification of rock material potential employment, optimizing the investigation phase and improving its results. In view of the representativeness of the rocks in the state of RS in addition to its importance in the regional geological context, this research aims to evaluate the pattern behavior of acidic and basic volcanic igneous rocks located in the Planalto Meridional geomorphological province from Serra Geral formation, regarding the main characterization tests, to predict the behavior performance and identify characteristics that require higher technological control. The data came from Fiorentini (2002), Pinheiro (2009), Paiva (2017) and Back (2018) evaluating the following properties/characteristics: absorption, density, silica content, mechanical performance, alterability, shape and lamellarity indexes. The results suggest that: when comparing the mechanical performance of volcanic rocks by means of acidity, there is no distinction, showing that the mechanical performance is not associated with the characteristics of acidity/density, but to the mineral granulation; alterability is more associated with the alteration degree of its minerals than its porosity characteristics; as smaller the dimension of the aggregate, higher the technological control of the shape and absorption characteristics must be; for basic volcanic rocks, a  technological control of the alterability characteristics of the rock must be maintained by the occurrence of volcanic glasses and hydrothermal actions.
