Abstract

The destination of solid waste is configured as one of the major problems faced by today's society. In Brazil, most of the collected solid urban waste goes to disposal in landfills, having registered an increase of 10 million tons in a decade. On the other hand, the amount of waste that goes to inadequate units (dumps and controlled landfills) has also grown, to just over 29 million tons per year. Computational tools, such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software, provide support to discriminate potential areas for landfill installation, more quickly and efficiently. Most of the projects developed in GIS have as their main argument the union of spatial data, making predictions through mathematical models and providing support in decisions. Among the mathematical methods most used in multicriteria analysis are the Boolean and fuzzy approaches. In this context, the present work aims to compare the Boolean and fuzzy methodology in order to discriminate which is more suitable to point out areas for the installation of a landfill in the Municipality of Campina Verde (MG). The methodology of this study, consisted of the application of the Boolean and fuzzy approaches in order to compare which would indicate a more suitable area for the installation of a landfill. The conclusion of the study characterizes the geoprocessing techniques as an effective and low cost tool, and the use of fuzzy logic simplifies the acquisition of the knowledge base, proving to be quite useful and accurate.
