VARIACIÓN ESPACIO-TEMPORAL EN EL PERÍODO 2000 AL 2020 EN EMBALSES DE LA PROVINCIA MAYABEQUE, CUBA
Spatio-temporal variation 2000 to 2020 period in Mayabeque Dams, Cuba
Abstract
Water-related ecosystems provide important economic and social benefits in all countries, which is why their protection has become a strategic priority. Particularly in Cuba, the availability of water represents a great challenge to achieve economic development and food security. This research carried out a study of the spatio-temporal variation of the main reservoirs of the Mayabeque province during the years 2000 to 2020, taking the five-year period 2000 - 2004 as a baseline. The methodology approved by the United Nations Organization was applied to monitor indicator 6.6.1 of the Sustainable Development Goals. The MNDWI and AWEIsh spectral indices calculated from the Landsat 5, 7 and 8 satellite images were used. The results showed a marked tendency to decrease the areas of the analyzed reservoirs, which corresponds to the behavior of the climate in Cuba in recent decades and points out the need to achieve comprehensive and sustainable water management that does not compromise the ecological integrity of the basins and the response to the growing demand for this vital resource.
