The Permanent Preservation Areas (APP), according to Federal Law no. 12,651/2012, are defined as “protected areas, covered or not by native vegetation, with the environmental function of preserving water resources, the landscape, geological stability and biodiversity, facilitating the gene flow of fauna and flora, protecting the soil and ensure the well-being of human populations”. Although APPs are legally protected, the majority end up being affected by human actions. Due to the environmental importance of these areas, there is a need for their inspection and monitoring, and for this, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) emerge as a great tool. This study identified and evaluated the use and occupation of APP land in a sub-watershed of the Doce River. These represent approximately 2.2% of its total area and 42.83% are preserved. The conditions of land use and occupation in the study area are a representation of what is observed in the Doce river watershed. Therefore, its preservation and recovery must focus efforts on its sub-basins, as these will reflect on the entire watershed.
