Abstract

The consolidations of the Metropolitan Region of Manaus and the large amount of mining processes related to sand ore, creating different points of mineral pressure, generate several negative environmental impacts. Thus, we seek to identify, based on the analysis of these processes in the responsible public agencies, if the environmental control commitments assumed in the emission phase of the licenses are fulfilled and the main associated environmental problems. The research was based on a quali-quantitative approach through documentary technical procedures. Most of the cases have some irregularity, with a high rate of rejections and infractions. In addition, it become evident that when well-managed, protected areas are important for environmental control. The current licensing system has proved to be ineffective in many cases, requiring the improvement of the environmental impact assessment tool, and the strengthening of public licensing agencies to then improve the use of this ore and the maintenance of environmental quality in the long term.
