The present paper is an examination of the aspects of self-image and self-esteem of elderly people. It was assessed 150 elderly participants of both sexes who exercise in two public universities in southern Brazil. We used the questionnaire of self-image and self-esteem of Steglich (1978). We used descriptive statistics, the Qui-quadrado and Kruskall-Wallis, with a significance level of p < 0,1. Most elderly people had a high self-image and self-esteem, in relation to the positive perception of appearance and functional capacity, in relation to life satisfaction and financial conditions, perception of happiness, acceptance / adjustment for age, relationship with children, social contact and a desire to further study. Older elderly people and those practitioners of gymnastics and water gymnastics had higher scores. The participation in physical exercise can be a positive factor on self-image and self-esteem of elderly people, but there are other aspects which contribute for positive variables.Downloads
