In many sports events the athlete’s success depends on the maintenance of repeated muscle contractions during a relatively long period. Despite extensive literature about fatigue, there still is little conclusive agreement about this physiological phenomenon. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to review the literature concerning the possible physiological events associated with acute muscle fatigue. Influences from the central nervous system, the cardiovascular system, as well as skeletal muscles may be factors affecting the development of fatigue. A new theoretical explanation for fatigue mechanisms is herein explained in order to reconcile conflicts found in the literature.Downloads
