Abstract

In order to make an approach of studies about emotional states and the practice in a competitive way of adventure sports, this article intended to analyze the indices of pre-competitive anxiety, self-confidence and self-efficacy of canoeing athletes, and also the possible correlations, considering the studied context. The study was carried out with the participation of sixteen athletes who played on South American Championship of Slalom Canoeing in 2005. They answered a questionnaire concerning general identification, other concerning self-efficacy and another concerning cognitive anxiety, somatic and self-confidence. As a result, the dialectic relation between high levels of self-confidence and/or self-efficacy and low levels of somatic anxiety, specially, cognitive anxiety was perceived. More experienced athletes judge themselves more capable to perform specific actions in this sport, considering the risk or danger situations usually present on adventure sports.
